I was born in Belmont, near Boston. When I was five--and living "down East" in N.S., I asked my mother where she got me and she quickly answered Filene's Basement in Boston. She said there was a beautiful Squaw standing up proud and tall on one of the counters, She was holding tight in her arms a cute little Papoose all wrapped in a pretty Indian blanket. She said the Papoose was so cute that she just had to buy her, a little girl-- and it was ME! I asked my mother how much she paid for me and she said "fifteen cents". I thought that was an awful lot of money she had to pay for me. All my life --even yet!-- I wondered about my "Indian Mother" the so-called "Squaw" whom I believed was the most beautiful woman in the whole world, and was I ever a proud little thing, knowing how extra special I was! I still hold that fantasy, and I thank my mother, an Acadian woman for this lifelong dream, and I often wished I had been an artist and could have made this original story into a BOOK!
